It's not really a matter of owning stuff really. The difference lies in what is said item's purpose? Too many people buy things to make them feel happy, and those are the one's I'm speaking of (blind consumerism). Yes I own a computer, but I went from having one, to not having one for many years...

How is me working at a retail store going to smash the state? Ad absurdum argument there? If my dream was to write, I'd not be working there. But that's not my dream, my dream requires me to work at such a pathetic job "for now".

I think for Bukowski, it's about him not truly knowing how to love. That's what I get from reading these sorts of poems. He loves, yet he's not able to express it in the flesh, so he did so through writing.
