    art & artists

Sometimes I am inclined to compare a painting with a chess position. Or a chess problem. Even though the latter has to be solved to unfold its beauty and deepness. Last month I participated in a team competition in Denmark. The walls of the building we played in were hung with works by Danish...

What are you listening to? The world really needs to know. Volume 8

Why seems all German music that is released nowadays so dull and boring compared to what this lady from East Berlin did forty years ago?

    Liza Williams - RIP

I've recently read a couple of poems from the period where Bukowski was together with Liza Williams, Tonight and The Gigolo. Both are related to her, and both are good ones.

What are you listening to? The world really needs to know. Volume 8

Geddy Lee‘s voice can be an obstacle, yes. But 30 years ago the music felt so strong that the voice of the lead singer didn‘t really matter.

What are you listening to? The world really needs to know. Volume 8

There is a German proverb: Über Geschmack lässt sich nicht streiten = you cannot argue about taste. If my dictionary is right, in English-language countries you say: There is no accounting for taste.

What are you listening to? The world really needs to know. Volume 8

I remember a friend introducing me to Rush at the end of the 1980ies. I listened to the album Hold Your Fire and found it great. The music and the lyrics.

And then Andreas started talking about Nazis

Ja Roni, das ist ein richtig starkes Vorwort, nicht nur für das Buch, sondern auch als Ansage an das verkackte Establishment überhaupt. Ich lese es immer wieder gerne.

Which is your favorite poetry book?

Too many edits in the Black Sparrow books, let alone the posthumous destruction, so my favorites now are clearly the Back to the Machinegun Volumes. In total almost 500(!) poems. A great work accomplished by some unknown Bukowski experts.

And then Andreas started talking about Nazis

It's amazing how much shit can happen within a short period of time. It's only three and a half years ago now that I ranted about racist tendencies in German society. It turned out that my own observations have been pretty much outperformed by reality since then. There's an extreme right-wing...

Charles Bukowski's Posthumous Edits: As the Spirit Wanes, Shit Happens

Reading this I remembered something that was published in the German letter collection Schreie vom Balkon. The subject matter was Dangling in the Tournefortia, and Bukowski wrote, re-translated: 'I like this book because it's the first one in many years that has been put together by myself, and...

the late season - Stephen Hines

Kindness among friends, that's what I thought when I read all the praise above. But it wasn't kindness. Not at all. It was more like a recognition of greatness. Because The Late Season is an incredibly well-written short story collection which picked me up from the first sentence. There is...

    Unknown Bukowski pictures?

Congrats Pogue, that's a nice little book. When I ordered a copy at Roni's Bukshop two or three years ago, I had to pay almost $60 for it... The book is a beautiful piece of art, a first edition that was published in April 1995 - 13 years before the story ('The Other') came out in Portions.
