Well, I saw Neil Young conclude his Eurotour last night. Awesome, this dude can write AND perform! The new songs seemed promising too. So... 8. Neil Young:

Bob Dylan lovers of the World, Unite!

Dylan resembles Tom Waits in that he's a better song writer than performer. I, at least, often prefer cover versions of Bob's songs. Bryan Ferry has recently done a good job on Dylanesque:

Tom Waits credits Bukowski for Frank

I agree completely on this. He doesn't sound hollow, but somewhat contrived. That strained circus-voice he has used in his later years... a direct opposite to Buk's motto: "Don't try". Reminds me of what Buk wrote about the falseness of the human voice in opera. I love the early more bluesy...

    Will it make my iPod?

Double header / The blessings of the internet: OK, so I've had this song lodged in my brain for years. (No it's not Combine Harvester) Not actually the whole song that is, but a bit of the refrain that goes like this: "Without love, we are like ships in the night...". I remembered really...

    Warren Zevon

Warren Z is great. His lyrics often have a seemingly artless, easy sincerity that reminds me of Buk's poems. I love this one from Mutineer (95). He really sings well too:

What are you listening to now?

Yeah, his Sou(r)ness writes the following: "They lived together in a succession of apartment houses around Alvarado street. The first place, 521 South Union Drive..." So Alvarado street would pretty much be the area of his Barfly years. Wonder what its like now. Anybody? Also found this with...

What are you listening to now?

Alvarado street & Pioneer chicken: Listening to Warren Zevon on my iPod (Creative Zen that is, yes, he made it) while mowing the lawn, I noticed the following lines from "Carmelita": And it hit me - these lines sound pretty bukowskiish, apart from the heroin bit, but hey: everyman to his own...

Bukowski.net's image of BUK... there's better...

I love that pic in the left hand corner. Looks like he's playing his typer like an accordion. The first time I saw it I didn't see the typer for what it was. It got my imagination going, just like a poem. Cool. It takes the focus off his face/myth/person and puts the words in the forefront. And...

Electronica backing to a Bukowski poem.

Nobody can create in a vacuum. Nobody can create without using other people's words. Your personality is made up of other peoples words, beginning with your mammy's. Originality needs to merge with banality. There's no escape. Its all in the balance of things. To much focus on originality often...

    Will it make my iPod?

Believe me, I know how you feel. This is the kind of song that literally "sticks" in your head whether you like it or not. Just like a bad smell. Strange thing: I originally heard "Combine Harvester" while tuned in to Radio Luxembourg on a squeeky AM channel years & years & years ago. I never...
