WHAT CAN WE DO? - blank gun silencer #9, 1994

Not one of his best to my ear. A bit bleak, morose and humorless. I can understand if it hasn't been collected before. It doesn't really go anywhere. That last line doesn't ring true to me. Almost feels a bit contrived! Must have been a bad night. Feels like I've read it before, but the...

    Poems: Existence

Hmm never thought about it like that. I was actually just listening to an MP3-file of monologues from different plays. Its a good way to get into Shaky, by the way. Lots of stuff from his plays can be appreciated on its own. (See www.librivox.org to get some Shakylogues on your earphones.) I i...

Seen any good movies lately? - Films you MUST see

Saw this yesterday. Great movie. Set in the year 2027, just about, but feels more like next year. A well spent 90 minutes. Good soundtrack too. Wait for the Jarvis Cocker song in the credits. "Cunts are still running the world". (I always thought they were mostly pricks....) Or see the vid here...

    Poems: Existence

Funny thing. A few days after writing this I was listening to some Shakespeare on my cheap MP3-player when the following line was read: So the question is: had Buk recently been reading Shaky when he came up with the word mewking? ;) Don't these lines from the poem sound a bit "shakyish"...

    Rollins interview snippet

No need to set the two up against each other. Buk & lyricists both have their strengths and shortcummings. I guess what I wanted to point out is that they have some important similarities that interest me. Both are linked to sound and the spoken word, and this makes them more accessible to...

    Rollins interview snippet

Hmmm mjp, the key phrase here is "they do not make good poetry". I'm not that much into Dylan myself (and I'm not a musician), his gaudy, surrealistic style turns me off, but you cannot hide the fact that he has written loads of fine narrative poems. If you don't want to call them poems OK...

    Rollins interview snippet

When you say "Poetry has been apart" you're forgetting tht many good song lyrics can be considered as poetry in their own right. In this sense poetry has NEVER been apart from ppl. Its always been part of the folk culture. Take Woody Guthrie's best lyrics f.ex., or the nursery rhymes you grew up...

"And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine"...

Just came across this song again while watching "The Big Sleep" (1946) with Humphrey Bogart & [FONT=Arial]Lauren Bacall. It features in a rowdy night club scene there. Some pretty rough lyrics in the song which includes gambling, drinking, violence and death. Opening lines: Bob Dylan also...

Brand new and dazed beyond comprehension

Welcome. The comments above remind me of the grandpa in the movie "Little Miss Sunshine". Seen that? Bukowski at 45? You should know that Buk was a late starter himself - as a writer that is. Oh and just yesterday I read the following in "Come On In!":

But suddenly it dawned on me: 1.def175 up, 32 downdef /def/ adj. to describe a person, thing, or event that is cool. iarchaic, circa 1981/i "yo, mah pizzles, I got da hook-up at this def new club. Dylan's Theme Time Radio

This may be old news to you, but what the heck. Found the following site with MP3s of all of Dylan's radio programs. Good good stuff. In program nr. 18 he reads a bit of Bukowski's "a radio with guts". What does he call him in the last comment? Deaf poet? Oh, and in the same program he...

    Pulp....a future film?

They also did: - Miller's Crossing - Blood Simple - Barton Fink --> this one is great! It kind of resembles Pulp in a way. - The Man Who Wasn't there I think the Cohens could pull this off. They have a sort of warped, surreal talent/humor. They also have enough cred in Hwood to bring along...

    Blowing My Hero

Got it. Crossed the Atlantic in only 5 days! Amber must live (or work) near the airport. Good clean read. The style actually gives the impression of a young person, twentyish - just like the main character. Liked that. Also liked the scene describing the "blowing of the Hero". Rather tenderly...
