The senseless, tragic rape of Charles Bukowski’s ghost by John Martin’s Black Sparrow Press

Well, he's painted himself into a corner. When someone says Bukowski's later collections are "uneven," they are criticizing what Martin did (whether they realize it or not). So short of admitting that he is the reason the posthumous books can be seen as "uneven," how else could he answer that...

    THIS IS NOT A TEST

Doesn't it? realbeer.com is even older than my first domains: Domain Name: REALBEER.COM Creation Date: 1995-01-21 Not sure when their Bukowski page(s) went up.

    THIS IS NOT A TEST

It was. Well, it was one of the first places on the web, period, so we won by default. ;) When it went up in September of 1995 (on the mjptv.com domain), there were fewer than 20,000 web sites in the world. I don't know when realbeer.com put up their Bukowski page, but it was also very early...

    THIS IS NOT A TEST

It would have been 1995, but it was probably just a few poems and a short story. The database started in 1999, when Krumhansl was published. I scanned the entire book and shoehorned the data into a primitive single table database. It stayed primitive until early 2006, and it's been steadily...

    THIS IS NOT A TEST

Well, this is how archive.org has immortalized the original home of the Bukowski database on smog.net eight years earlier: It's not their fault it's broken. Using imagemaps as navigation was stupid (they require another server-side file to work properly, the 'map' part of the image map). But...

    THIS IS NOT A TEST

Pretty much everything about the early days of the web. Things came and went and no one kept track of it, probably because it wasn't possible to keep track of it. There's no trace of the company that I first rented web server space from back in 1995, no mention of them anywhere, no mention of...

"Piss" from Betting on the Muse

If there's not a recording listed in the database, a recording probably doesn't exist. There were only a couple of "readings" after 1980 (done in his home), and this poem was written in the 90s, so it's unlikely that he ever read it.

    Guitars, basses and other noisemakers

I restrung the Special yesterday (no more tailpiece overwrap), and I was playing it and playing it and thinking, damn, you know, this cheap ($499 - clearance sale, baby!) 2012 guitar feels better and plays better than any guitar I've ever picked up, including the vintage Juniors, Strats, Les...

Wright on Bukowski: "Charles Bukowski! He's one of my top three authors in my life, him and Kurt Vonnegut. I've read all of Bukowski’s books and I've read several of them many times. Every few years, even if I don't read the whole book again, I have to go back and read bits of him. He's...

    Buk's Thanksgiving (excerpt of "Women")

That's kind of a misleading excerpt, because after he says he's doing "nothing" on Thanksgiving, Debra says: "Why don’t you have Thanksgiving with me? I’ll get the turkey. I’ll have 2 or 3 friends over." "All right, it sounds good."

    Database updated

Yeah, I fixed the lists that rely on database queries, but the lists that are static pages are going to take more time. I made a temporary fix to prevent the blank results, so they should all work now, they just don't have the title URL.

    Database updated

In the never-ending quest to appease the Gods (a.k.a. Google), I have made some changes to the database code to add the poem, book, magazine, recording, etc. titles to the URLs on the results pages. Like so: To get that to work I had to update the code in pretty much every file that the...
