What about a spin off to Amber's thread listing books that have offended others? Maybe it can help to see that it is a fairly common thing. I'll start:

In Woody Guthrie's "Bound For Glory" he describes an incident from his childhood where a sadistic cousin brutally kills a litter of kittens. The cousin was offended and actually sued Woody for libel!

I think Hemingway offended 90% of hiss friends with his thinly veiled portrayals of them in The Sun Also Rises.
there's an interesting book by Louise Desalvo called Conceived With Malice.
