BUKOWSKI
THE BASEMENT TAPES

(The lost tapes of Charles Bukowski)

Written by Ben Pleasants
Photographed by Lawrence Robbins

In the early ’70s, Pleasants asked Bukowski if he could be his biographer.
Bukowski liked the idea. In time, that resulted in the tapings of a series of
interviews, some of which Pleasants has made available to Malibu Magazine
and presented here.

“I drank some more whiskey and left my room. I started banging on all the doors. I yelled, ‘I’m Charles Bukowski, the poet. I want to have some fun. Let me in.’ I hear giggles from behind the door. Then I go to the next door and yell, ‘I really mean it. Open up.’ Nobody did.

Hahaha that's great.
