But I'm completely ok with it. I've been hunting this bad boy for years. Any used book store with a mass market rack has been perused many times over, but I've only seen ONE of these for sale before (going for about $150 or so).

So... maybe I paid too much. But... I love it. Now I just need a BSP hardcover first and one of the Stackpole copies and I'll have the full run.

It's not overpaying if it's worth it to you.

I myself may have "overpaid" for a few books that I have, but the happiness they've brought me is priceless.

That's my feeling too. I can't imagine paying that much for any other mass market books, but Ask the Dust... worth every penny.

Gotta love the old time artwork.

There's a shop here in downtown Portland that sells all kinds of art books\graphic novels and similar items on one level and then has a room full of porno mags on the bottom one. Also abound are lots of porn novels with awesome covers illustrated like those.

Makes me laugh every time I go in there.

The only thing I would be concerned with is all those bids from a 0 feedback user. That can be a sign of shill bidding (the seller bidding on their own item to drive the price up). Of course now that you can't see the full usernames of the other bidders on eBay there is no way to check in a couple months to see if that user actually bought anything, making it next to impossible to really prove shill bidding.

Something tells me if you had scheduled that $150 bid as a last second snipe (or just watched the auction at the end and made your move with 10 or 15 seconds left) you would have won the book for about $60. Because in that case t***e (0) wouldn't have had a chance to drive the price up.

I know that opinions here are divided on sniping auctions, but this is a perfect example of why it's the only way to bid on eBay.

ebay forces people to snipe because they now assist selllers using shills. They assist them by providing them perfect cover. I have always shied away from sniping programs as I always felt that they were unfair, but the idea that I could screw a seller that intended on shilling my bid up AND screw ebay out of a few dollars has now convinced me that this is the way to go.

Well, the proxy bidding system eBay uses takes any unfair advantage away from the sniper and gives the advantage to the normal bidder (a sniper will never have time to counter a higher proxy bid).

But then masking the identity of the bidders takes all that advantage away and puts the regular proxy bidder at a great disadvantage (see above).

Anyway, LickTheStar, if you're glad to have the book and didn't bid more than you think it's worth, it's all good.

I was a bit weirded out by the fact that my $250 bid went unchallenged in the last few minutes and considered the fact that it may have been inflated falsely...

But overall, I'm happy with the price. That particular edition comes up so rarely that I'm alright with it even if I overpaid a bit. That baby's going to be vacuum sealed and cradled inside some pillows or something.
