Good Find (1 Viewer)

Yesterday I went to a bookstore in Syracuse NY, and when the owner told me he didn't have any Bukowski because he sells out so fast, his words "There's hundreds of authors but people only care about one." I looked anyway, and found an issue of Evergreen, a literary magazine. In it is published "The Birth Life and Death of an Underground Newspaper" by Charles Bukowski.

I was very happy with this find.:)

(the only thing that was weird, was they put Bukowski in with the beats, and Bukowski never considered himself a beat, and said so in various interviews)

Welcome to the forum, Elise! - That was a good find! I hope you got it cheap.
Right, Buk was no beat, but they label him beat anyway...

anyone read jean-françois duval's bukowski and the beats? it was a weird book for me, and a weird connection. locklin discusses the similarities between bukowski and kerouac in his a sure bet, but i don't know about putting them in the same category. admittedly, that may, in part, be that i've never really been a big fan of the beats, but really i think there are such obvious differences in language and style... what do others think?

and elise, good find. i'm always thrilled when i stumble across anything bukowski in used books. but, actually, not finding anything can be just as fun, too. my funniest used-bookstore experience: i was in san fransisco two years ago, haight-ashburyish, and wandered into this used bookstore piled so high it was like nothing i'd ever seen. when the woman behind the counter asked if she could help me find anything, i asked if she had any bukowski. she literally started screaming at me. "you won't find any of his books in here! whenever anyone brings them in to sell i assume they're stolen and this isn't that kind of store! and i WON'T sell ANY of his PORN!!!!!" i had to leave, like, instantaneously, because i thought i was going to die laughing. she was so offended! i've been in a million used bookstores looking for bukowski and never in life have i gotten a response like that. it actually made my day.

Yes, I own it. One of my favorite Bukowski interviews actually. Duval did a really wonderful job. It is rather interesting.

wow, youre lucky to have found that. do you mind if i ask how much the bookseller took for it?

He only asked for 6 something, including tax, so it was about $7.
