Making of the movie ''Barfly'' written by Charles Bukowski (1 Viewer)

Rourke fucked this role up outtasite. If anyone has seen any interview with Bukowski, they would know, instantly, what a sham this "performance" was. Probably because those 2 idiots Golan and Globus were involved. Still, it does not excuse this supremely shite performance by Rourke himself.

If there's anything about Bukowski you learn over time, it's that Bukowski got very jealous of anyone who got more attention at any given moment. That could be another writer, a musician like Bob Dylan, or some random guy at a party.

He also had a tendency to take cheap shots at people who he knew for years.

At the same time, it was that self-doubt that kept him writing like a lunatic until the day he died.

Absolutely! Bukowski was truly a 5 star vainglorious chap who had no compunctions walking all over others to elevate himself.

When I first saw Barfly back in 1652, I was already not a Rourke fan, and my thoughts then were much what I originally posted above. It just seemed way too exaggerated and I never found the words to critique Rourke until I saw that interview with Bukowski, about a year or two back on Utube and the quote from that which struck me was "Bukowski said that Rourke "didn't get it right... He had it all kind of exaggerated, untrue. He was a little bit showoff about it."

But the truth is... I was never a Rourke fan. He should stayed with boxing. He came close with Angel Heart though.

Was that the year or a venue?

I've only seen Barfly once, when it was new, and I thought Rouke hammed it up and got Bukowski wrong. I should watch it again sometime.
