I saw Black Sabbath in the 70s when I was a kid and they scared the shit out of me. They didn't do anything scary, per se, they just seemed dangerous and angry. And loud.Sabbath was the loudest band I'd ever heard to that point.
Sabbath was the loudest band I'd ever heard to that point. That honor lasted for about 40 minutes until Cult took the stage and made Sabbath sound like a string quartet. Not better, per se, just a fuck of a lot louder.
To me, a stubby, balding, shrieking man is not spooky, and he was trying to be spooky and underworld and ominous. So I laughed whenever I saw him, and laughing = joke. Why a joke?
Dio's generation is a dying breed. There will always be plenty of pretentious douchebags to front subpar metal bands. The one thing to lament, is that Dio's generation of frontmen are a dying breed.
