Is anybody around here familiar with 4chan?

The online-newspaper I'm reading has a web-section and in the last weeks it was full of 4chan. I hadn't even heard about them before. So I went there and did see a lot of porny pictures and anonymous hate posts.

I understand they inventented or popularized Rickrolling and Lolcats but I don't really get it. It seems to me that their only merit is being many and thus, behaving like anonymous lemmings, they are able to make some impact on the net.

My favorite part of the wikipedia-article is about the founder of 4chan, "moot":

"It reported that moot was living with his mother while looking for a way to make money from owning 4chan."

So, what you are saying is that I am guilty of ....not that there's anything wrong with that.

On some level some people have to be lifted up by the positive upbeat aspects of a decent to show his appreciation. Of course he is a scholar of music and performance.
I'm glad you identified one of my characteristics, thanx.

*If I'm an asshole for introducing some into this conversation, well I'm sorry, you already know me by now.

4chan has been around forever. It's just a bunch of kids, but since we live in futuristic times, they wreak (relatively) harmless havoc on the interwebs rather than making prank phone calls from the basement.

Last thing I read was they threatened a "Band" called "Blood on the Dancefloor" with anonymous calls and rape and murder.

I was going to say that this is very bad and inhuman but then the article linked some pictures of "Blood on the Dancefloor".

So it is still bad and inhuman. You shouldn't scare them more than necessary. Those from "Blood on the Dancefloor" are probably a bunch of nice girls and making great music. You just have to give them a chance.

do a google search for "jessi slaughter" if you want to know more about 4chan & blood on the dance floor. it's pretty funny, actually. the lead singer's name is "dahvie vanity." i think 4cahn originally started as a site for image sharing/discussion, but it offers complete anonymity, which has led to the creation of some forums where hackerish prankster stuff goes on.

On a related topic, the other day I came across a listing for Charles Bukowski on the "Encyclopedia Dramatica"--don't know if this has been discussed here previously. But this is such a mish-mash of silly idiocy--it's not clever like "The Onion". Just don't get it I'm afraid. Here is the link if you are interested. http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Charles_Bukowski

just went to that 4chan-site and it bores me so much, I didn't even bother to click any link. It's too much for me already.

(... of course, I'm web-savvy enough to know the general idea of 'chans'.
Should we have a 'bukchan' now or what?)

I didn't even know what a 'chan' is supposed to be and still am not sure I get it. Except Jackie Chan.

Did you notice that they are referring to this forum and even post a post of CarversDog from 2009 there?

Further: "Most Bukowski communities are very uptight and snobish when it comes to their favorite writer. To merely mention Bukowski in a bad light will move an entire forum against you and you will find yourself ignored, warned and banned in short order. But being banned from highbrow forums does not stop literary critics. Some people cannot stand Bukowski and his inebriated scrawling. / This guy has the balls to stand up and call Bukowski's work the junk writing that it is. I hope he has life insurance, the rabid pack of Bukowski assholes is on it's way. If the mob wont shut him up, perhaps a smear campaign will..."

It seems to be a Japanese invention. So, there's no need to 'GET' it. It's just fancy and it's here.

Did you notice that [...]

No I didn't, b/c I wasn't able to browse that site either. It looked like an effort to be a funny version of wikipedia at first sight. And I think there are about a hundred funny versions of wikipedia out there already.
