Pogue Mahone
Officials say drugs may have played a part
This is a really great poem that later appeared in Heat Wave and Betting on the Muse.
While I was comparing it to the version in Betting on the Muse, I was amazed... Word for word, all the original breaks, just like Wormwood... Then I got to the last six lines...
I guess the great editor felt compelled to make his mark, removing "to death" to soften it up. I know it's small, but I think it weakens the poem.
Original:
Then I saw a spider making a web
across a window.
I found a match, walked over,
lit it and burned the spider to
death
then I felt better.
much better.
