Notes of a Dirty Old Man - Open City (1 Viewer)

Does the forum have all the Dirty Old Man columns from all the alternative papers that he appeared in? I'm often tempted to buy a single issue here and there, but they are pricey and who knows what poems (yes poems) appeared here and there. Many Dirty Old Man colums were poems.

No. Does anyone?

There are a lot of Dirty Old Man columns spread around here, I've never attempted to organize them all in one place.

I have most of Bukowski's Notes of the Dirty Old Man from Open City. The ones I’m missing I gave to USC library two finish their collection of the paper. They were never returned to me after they microfilm them.

We would publish special issues inserted in the paper of his poems and other writers and works of art.

I was the art director of the paper...
Did you work for Essex House too?

Edit: Never mind, you already answered that.

Does anyone?
I just found this (while looking for something else), which claims to be 98% of the Free Press columns. Of course even if it is, that leaves the Open City version...

And I just found these...

17654

Which I'm pretty sure came from ROC Digney in Burnaby.

So maybe we do have (almost) everything. Getting it all onto the site or forum is another matter...

Open City is done. It should be that four are missing (there are 83 here, there are supposed to be 87) but there are more than four breaks in the dates, as you can see. I suspect that Open City just didn't publish some weeks, around holidays or when they were too stoned. The end/start dates don't always exactly line up either, but this is what I have.

Buk appeared in Open City prior to the Notes... column. For example, the review An Old Drunk Who Ran Out Of Luck, which the DB flags as being collected only in Portions of a Wine-Stained Notebook (it is in there), originally appeared in the May 5-11, 1967 issue (not under the Notes... moniker). I'll try to scan and post, but my copy is rather tattered. I also have a copy of Take Me Out to the Ball Game from the 1968 insert (which the DB flags as #70, but mine has no ID markings). That's in better shape and I'll scan and post here so we have the original.

Do you have a date on that Renaissance insert issue of Open City?

The weeklies are a pain in the ass to shoehorn into the database, which is why I've put it off...well, forever. Until now, for whatever reason.

There are only a few other reviews by Bukowski in the database, and I only entered those because David put them in City Lights collections. I don't think there are that many, but I can add a "review" category and put them in. And I'll add magazine entries for what you've posted here.

Adding all the Open City appearances has exposed a weakness in the way I was storing magazine data. As you may know, the database began life in a much more rudimentary form, and in the past it was enough to sort magazines by year, but since Open City was weekly, now I have to add more detailed date information in order to get them (and later NOLA Express and the Los Angeles Free Press) to sort properly when they are listed together.

I can enter two separate dates for something like October 4-10, 1967, but it comes out like October 4-October 10, 1967, because of the way those dates are parsed. (And what do you do with the assholes who just said, "Spring," or "Fall"?)

Not your problem, anyone in the world reading this, I'm just complaining. I brought it on myself.

No, there are no header/footer markings regarding a date anywhere. It's labeled at the top right of page one as "Open City Section Two." I had long assumed that it belonged with the May 5-11, 1967 version (Volume 2, Number 1) of Open City because I believe I got them as a package deal (it's been some 10 years now...!). But the only indication of a date in the Renaissance insert is in the author footer to one of the poems where a composition date of November 1967 is given. I have no idea where "No. 70" (as indicated in the DB) comes from.

there are more than four breaks in the dates, as you can see
I believe I can help fill some of the gaps:

I made a picture because it's hard to preserve original formatting (tabs and all) in forum posts. In case you want to copy/paste this, here's the (scrambled) text:

Code:

"show me a man who lives alone and has a perpetually dirty kitchen" Open City #9, June 30-July 6, 1967 Tales of Ordinary Madness (Too Sensitive)

"did you ever consider that lsd and color tv arrived..." Open City #22, September 27-October 3, 1967 Tales of Ordinary Madness (A Bad Trip)

"jesus, mother, it was terrible--here they came pounding..." Open City #53, May 15-30, 1968 Notes of a Dirty Old Man, p.38

I believe I can help fill some of the gaps:
Beautiful, thanks.

The two remaining gaps both being at the end of the summer suggests that they may have taken a hiatus at that time of year, and there aren't any issues to find.

David said (somewhere) that 87 issues contained Bukowski, but with your additions here it looks like we have 90.

I've counted 89* issues of Open City with Bukowski's column in it.
*Bukowski's Gossip Column and The Horseplayer issues included

It looks like out of 92 issues he didn't write a column for numbers 1, 18 and 66.
In #1 he wrote a review of that Hemingway book, and I haven't seen any scans for #18 and #66.

David said (somewhere) that 87 issues contained Bukowski
He probably didn't count the issues with "Bukowski's Gossip Column" and The Horseplayer (cartoon).

"The Horseplayer" cartoon isn't in the database, but there is a story in that issue too.

"jesus, mother, it was terrible--here they came pounding..." Open City #53, May 15-30, 1968
This one was in there, but the date range was wrong. Thanks.

Digney's scans have this labeled 1/3, and he named all the images with the first date in the range for the issue (though there's no written or printed date on the images).

Take Me Out to the Ball Game from the 1968 insert (which the DB flags as #70, but mine has no ID markings
Abel cites the source of that poem in the Storm collection as an August 1968 manuscript, so the Renaissance issue would likely be later than August. Now that I look at it, if the numbering convention was consistent the September 20-26, 1968 issue would have been #70.

My bad, didn't check the source I handed to you. Typical of me.

Dorbin* says:
C407) "Take Me Out To The Ballgame," in RENAISSANCE OPEN CITY SECTION TWO (etc.), p. 4.
CB edited this issue of RENAISSANCE, published as part two of OPEN CITY no. 70 (20-26 September 1968), for which editor John Bryan was arrested & charged with obscenity because of the inclusion of Jack Micheline's story "Skinny Dynamite" [p. 2].
