Here are my scans of the Bukowski section of Pulpsmith Vol. 2, No. 4 (Winter 1983), pp. 28–54, plus the cover.
INTERVIEW (pp. 28–36)
"The New York Quarterly Craft Interview: Charles Bukowski", conducted by William Packard and billed as "poetry's 'bad boy' tells all". Pulpsmith ran it as a continuation of NYQ's craft interview series. It opens with Bukowski's letter agreeing to do the interview and Packard's reply explaining the format: a list of 16 questions, answered directly on the typer.
POEMS (pp. 36–39), first print appearances:
- the drowning of the id
- jam
- competition
- down the hatch
The section also includes "the secret of my endurance" (p. 40). It had already been collected in Dangling in the Tournefortia (1981), but it's visible on the scan with the first letter.
- competition was later collected in Open All Night (2000), and down the hatch in The Continual Condition (2009). It could be interesting to compare these versions with the book versions.
- jam and the drowning of the id both survive as 1979 carbons and were later included in Back to the Machinegun, Manuscripts Volume 3, 1978–1980 (2014).
LETTERS (pp. 41–50)
Bukowski's letters to Packard at the NYQ, dated July 1978 to December 1979. They are typed, signed "Buk" and full of his drawings. One has a handwritten note from Linda Lee.
HARRY SMITH LETTER (pp. 51–54)
A handwritten letter dated 12/16/82 from Pulpsmith editor Harry Smith to Bukowski, on The Smith letterhead. It explains how the interview and letters ended up in Pulpsmith through an arrangement between NYQ and Pulpsmith.
The interview was later printed in New York Quarterly 27 (Summer 1985).
Enjoy!
