The published version of Carson McCullers gives us the well-known line:

the cruelty
of loveless love​

But the manuscript version reads:

​

the cruelty
of the loveless lover​

​

Along with the other numerous unnecessary "improvements" we have come to know and love (lovelessly).

Or something.
