Jory Sherman - In All His Glory (1 Viewer)

From porn and incest stories to run-of-the-mill western stories. What a great leap forward, what progress...:D

Now, now, these are "case histories", scientific stuff. Oedipal stuff. Important stuff. It was, of course, the 1960s and sexual boundaries had to be knocked down in whatever way possible. Using "case histories" was just one way.

And, anyway, Buk got into lots of shit for one of his fictional stories about a child molester. ("The Fiend"?)

But I think JS would have done better to have used a pseudonym back then for these books.

Some of the other titles, not by JS, included for sale in that ad are even further off the scale. Type of thing that helped get Open City and other rags of that era busted for obscenity. Wasn't it a Jack Michelene story on incest that spelled the demise of OC? Could be wrong there.
bp
p.s., as someone (Bob Segarini of The --ahem-- Wackers) said of music, "there is only good and bad music". Same goes for writing, "case histories", poetry, westerns, replies to web forums....

Skinny Dynamite?
It doesn't involve incest, but it is pretty porno.

I have a signed copy I should probably put on ebay as I don't really care for it (i.e. I don't think it's great writing)

True! You have to take into account the times they were written in.

Ah yes, The Fiend. It's not often that somebody writes a story about a child molester where we view it from the molesters point of view. Buk had guts when he wrote it!

Anyone seen "The Woodsman" ? Its a disturbing tale of a paroled offender and his "rehabilitation". Nonetheless, great acting from both Kevin Bacon and Mos Def (as Bacon's parole officer). Kevin Bacon really was terrific in an unsympathetic role.

Though I am unaware of any Buk connections to this screenplay.....

I've heard he's had a lot of success writing Westerns. Not my cup of tea, but it's a notch or two above Romance.
Then have you checked out his chill series?

He was legally blind in one eye, for the negative comments made about artwork. He was cantankerous, yes, but a good man. When those who were making comments about self loving tripe. You finish almost 500 (still selling, great books) and not be aware of yourself. It's his birthday today. He's been gone 9 yrs and it still feels like yesterday since I lost my mentors. His wife Charlotte was also a great writer. His other son who did the artwork had a good artistic eye filled with creativity. I knew Jory, & Charlotte on a personal level. His memoir of Bukowski I've seen the photos and heard the other stories untold. I have gone through the many letters and books from Bukowski that some have never seen. I find it funny, some assumptions. And it just goes to show, why some artists and writers never come forth, due to the ignorance behind keyboards of assumption.
My question has anyone read everyone of his books? I have tons of them. And has anyone read his chill series? What's your favorite?

If it wasn't for him. I wouldn't of written the book I'm about to complete. He was a great teacher and more intelligent than anyone I've ever met.

Bukowski Lost Respect For Jory Sherman When Sherman Turned To Writing Cowboy Stories

Agreed, but Sherman's books are formulaic yarns filled with cliches and cheap sentimentality. The woman are always "buxom wenches bursting out of their bodices" (not that that's something to dislike) and the men are always of the "few words and a fast draw" type. Cowboy stories. And Sherman is pretentious enough to state that he and other writers of his ilk "ride the horse of History". More like the horse of "royalties".

If you enjoy obvious books that excite gullible adolescents then "Tucson Tom and the Texas Two-Step" and "The Tales of Phoenix Phil and Albuquerque Al" are for you.

Now then, where's my Zane Gray collection?
I'm utterly curious to whom you are to be able to state such a statement. Did you know them both?
Love some Zane Grey.
My second fave to JS, William Johnstone.

I've written a 5-volume saga about a gay autistic cowboy who is a Nazi. Any publishers interested? (he also beats his wife!)
Sounds like my neighbor ? ?

Since I wrote my last post in this thread, many years ago, I've changed my opinion about westerns. Many of them are damned good. Maybe that's just me being an old man, or maybe less of a literary snob. I came across a western of Jory's recently and bought it. I'll give it a try. I'm also -- I like to think -- less judgmental about people and situations.

Silverstone wrote: "His wife Charlotte was also a great writer. [...] I have gone through the many letters and books from Bukowski that some have never seen." Did his wife publish under her own name or using a penname? The letters from Bukowski would be interesting, I think.

I just found this on a website of author pseudonyms:
"Martin, Cort
Charlotte Sherman
Jory Sherman"
So, they wrote a few books together. They look like a blend of western and erotica. Here's link to some titles: https://bookscouter.com/author/martin-cort

Something to know about "Mullinax," who started this thread and was very hard on Jory Sherman: he's a notorious troll who hates anyone who has written about knowing Bukowski personally. He spent years attacking me for my Bukowski memoir. Just to put this discussion in perspective.

One of Sherman's westerns from 1975.
