..."fuck you, you can't find another Typhoon like this anywhere"...

Ah, I see.

I like mine better. No offense, but as you can see, it comes with a swingin' 1964 chick.

You do indeed. It was directed by David Lynch's daughter Jennifer, and it's about as fucked up as you would expect from someone with that pedigree.

"Boss Of Bosses", by O'Brien and Kurins, is a good read, especially due to the transcripts of the Castellano wiretaps.

I looked for the Provenzano book by Longrigg on Amazon, but I couldn't find it! Is it a good read?

The Castellano wiretaps is the power of books, impossible to find such details in a documentary.

The bio on Provenzano is a good book but still expensive: http://www.amazon.com/dp/071956848X/?tag=charlebukowsa-20
Try your local library...

Ah, you found it! So both the Castellano book and the Provenzano book have the same title, "Boss Of Bosses"? How weird - and confusing!

So you sold Ruddy a car once? That's funny. It must've been a good car since you're still here...:D

I was afraid of that idea. Please note Mr. Ruddy was not in anyway associated with the subject of this thread and I do not wish to infer any such association between Mr. Ruddy and any criminal organizations. I was simply stating that Mr. Ruddy was a fine customer who was fair and honest with me in our transaction. At least from my very limited point of view.

I guess I've never watched the Sopranos because I'm reading about the real Italian mafia since years and years.
You must love Nicholas Pillegi? What'ya think of his pal Marty? Haha...

The Sopranos is a good show... never watched it religiously, but when I did I was impressed. When you get at the very end though, the last episode ever, you will be severely dissapointed.

Don't worry, Gerard! m sure Mr. Ruddy realizes that we're only kidding, if he ever reads this thread...

The city of Las Vegas is opening an Organized Crime Museum some time in '09; should be interesting. As one would expect, there were a lot of arguments in the civic and public sector over the mere idea but in the end it was hard to escape the cool, hard logic that the city was built by the efforts of La Cosa Nostra and the so-called Jewish Mafia. There's a plaque in honor of Ben Siegel in the courtyard of the new Flamingo Hotel. Today, though, thanks to the efforts of Mayor Oscar Goodman (former mob lawyer), the casino owners treat their establishments as businesses. If you owe a casino money, the odds are better that you will be sued into oblivion in a court of law rather than thrown into the trunk of a Buick and driven out to the desert for your fatal aluminum bat beating.

That's a maybe. We get sent room comps periodically, but my wife recently started a new job with no vacation until April or so. What with saving for a house and all, we'll have to see. But if airfare is reasonable, a long weekend might be possible at some point. I haven't taken any real vacation time since that trip last April.

Sorry for the diversion everyone; carry on.

hhhmm, English subtitles?

Taken from a forum: This film is fairly new and the answer is no, at this present time. But be sure there will be an american transation in the near future.

Yes, I'm sure there will be because there's already a version with Scandinavian subtitles.
I've ordered it and I'm loking forward to watching it. The whole 10 hour series are on Youtube but without subtitles. I saw some clips and it looks like a good series.
Toto Riina was the guy who declared war on the Italian establishment and ordered the killings of the judges, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsalino and many more high ranking officials. He's now in prison for life after having escaped the police for 30 years...

Stumbled across this thread when I was searching for comments about 'The Wire'. Anyway, I'd recommend the film Gomorra to anyone with an interest in Mafia-type stuff. Just don't watch it if you're planning on going to Naples any time soon.

Thanks, Bruno. I just ordered the movie Gomorra for 6 bucks all in.

Compelling interview with Roberto Saviano, who infiltrated Naples' organised crime gang, the Camorra, and revealed the worldwide grip the gang has in business and commerce. His book, Gomorrah, has become a global best seller and has been made into a highly acclaimed film.

He now lives under constant armed guard, moving from one secret location to another.
Italian with English subtitles.

Here he is interviewed by Lawrence Pollard for BBC2's The Culture Show.

[This video is unavailable.]

I would like to watch it. It sounds interesting.

I've watched all 10 hours of "Il Capo Dei Capi" (it's called "Corleone" here), and it's a great series. If you're into watching gangster movies, you'll like it!
I'm sure it'll soon be released with English subtitles...

Hope you like it Ponder. It's very gritty to say the least. The are several stories taking place which don't really overlap beyond the involvement of the Camorra. Which is a tad unconventional in a cinematic sense but perhaps all the more realistic for that.

Watched goodfellas and casino the other day.
Didn't like the first one and liked the second.

Absolutely.

Never seen both movies before.
Of course I heard tons of positive sounds about goodfellas
but sorry, not my piece of cake.

I liked both, each in its own way. Both were made over real life events. I think Goodfellas really showed us how organized crime works through violence and murders, or the threat of it. It was more exciting to watch than Casino, although casino was very exciting too.

Btw, the protagonist in Goodfellas, Henry Hill, is now selling his "primitive" paintings and drawings on ebay. They're very cheap, so I gather they're not too popular. It is of course just Hill trying to make an easy buck from his name's notoriety.

Didn't he do a cookbook too? Called The Wiseguy's Cookbook or something. Quite surprised he hasn't received a pair of concrete waders to be honest.

Absolutely! They look like they were done by a small child.

Btw, his children (now middle aged) wrote a book about what an awful dad he was. even after he and his family came into the witness protection program. I saw his son talk about it on "60 min.". He was wearing a disguise, so nobody afterward would recognize him as the son of Henry Hill. The TV crew asked Hill about the son's accusations in his home (the son did'nt want to be interviewed together with him, since he and his sister long ago had severed all connection to Hill), and all he could say was the usual babble about all families having trouble from time to time.
Having seen various video clips with Henry Hill on Youtube, including the very good documentary Ponder links to, I must say he appears to be very immature for an adult. Apparently, the many years of "high life" with lots of money, nightclubs and girls has affected his personality.

He's missed a trick with the price of the paitings though. By making it fairly cheap to buy them he's more or less admitting he knows they're shit too :D
