modest mouse lyrics (1 Viewer)

hello.

i just wanted to share with you all, that one of my favorite bands has a song called bukowski, and it seems to be about charles bukowski indeed. it is on an album called Good News For People Who Love Bad News. the band has a website up at www.modestmouse.com if you are interested. i will include the lyrics here for you to read, and hopefully discuss. here is also a short introduction to the band, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modest_mouse

Lyrics:

Woke up this morning and it seemed to me,
that every night turns out to be
A little more like Bukowski.
And yeah, I know he's a pretty good read.
But God who'd wanna be?
God who'd wanna be such an asshole?
God who'd wanna be?
God who'd wanna be such an asshole?

Well we sat on the edge of the river,
the crowd screamed, "Sacrifice the liver!"
If God takes life, he's an Indian giver.
So tell me now why, you'll tell me never.
Who would wanna be?
Who would wanna be such a control freak?
Well who would wanna be?
Who would wanna be such a control freak?

Well see what you wanna see. You should see it all.
Well take what you want from me. You deserve it all.
Nine times out of ten our hearts just get dissolved.
Well I want a better place or just a better way to fall.

But one time out of ten, everything is perfect for us all.
Well I want a better place or just a better way to fall.
Here we go!

If God controls the land and disease,
keeps a watchful eye on me,
If he's really so damn mighty,
my problem is I can't see,
well who would wanna be?
Who would wanna be such a control freak?
Well who would wanna be?
Who would wanna be such a control freak?

Evil home stereo, what good songs do you know?
Evil me, oh yeah I know, what good curves can you throw?

Well all that icing and all that cake,
I can't make it to your wedding, but I'm sure I'll be at your wake.
You were talk, talk, talk, talkin' in circles that day,
when you get to the point make sure that I'm still awake, OK?

Went to bed and didn't see
why every day turns out to be
a little bit more like Bukowski.
And yeah, I know he's a pretty good read.
But God who'd wanna be?
God who'd wanna be such an asshole?

I've been known to bop around th'ol' studio to that one more than once.

there's a few quotes within the song that i appreciate (the wedding/wake one, and the god=indian giver), but on the whole i dont see the song having terribly much to do with old buk, it's rather disjointed and has the feel of an inside joke i'm not getting. i also feel naming the song "bukowski" was a sort of subconsious (or conscious) decision on the bands part to market to the new youthful hip haircut market who's diggin' on buk lately.

dont get me wrong, i enjoy the song trememdously. but not really for the buk bits, though they make me smile.

aaaand im out. happy paddy's everyone!
xoxo

bop-edi-bop.

hmm, interesting. i don't know why, but i didn't really realize, or understand.. that people would respond to this post. especially with knowledge about the song, not to say that i posted it to apear unique or anything. nice to see that we have atleast one more bukowski and modest mouse fan around.

what's a paddy, and why is it happy.

I get an email every week or two informing me that song and the band exist, so they must have quite a few fans. But yeah, reading the lyrics - it is all over the place. Are they singing about gawd, Bukowski, a woman, a stereo? Well I guess it doesn't matter as long as it sounds good, and you can bop, bop against that curtain while it plays. ;)

also bluealbum, modest mouse did another song and it appears on the lonesome crowded west entitled long distance drunk and it is also about our dear friend Bukowski.

they have some pretty weird/out there lyrics, it makes alot more sense when you hear the songs. just reading their lyrics doesn't do much.

Yes, I am also a Fan of the group. Not only do they mention him in some songs, but many of the themes in the music seem to be connected to Bukowski's work. In fact the life style of the lead singer is not that much different at all.
