Poem: the mockingbird "the cat striding down through centuries" the centuries what does it mean? (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I try to translate to hungarian "the mockingbird" poem, and there's one line that hard to me:
"the cat striding down through centuries"
I suppose the centuries is not hundred years, or yet?

i believe the cat in that poem - and the other one about that incident "conversation on a telephone" - represents the coldness or cruelty humanity is capable of. i think "centuries" is meant in the same sense as saying "throughout history"

but the cat is used as a metaphor.
