In the Cal. Lit. Scene interview from 1970, B. says that the story he published in Story was titled "Woodbury Nut". WTF? Maybe he was thinking of the story which appeared in Write?

"Woodbury nut" could be a misheard "Whit Burnett."

And wasn't the English teacher a woman in other stories? ;)

Okay, so his story about seeing the president was in high school. That teacher
was a woman. I don't think I'm going anywhere with this, but. . . well you
know how it is.

That will lead to another clue, and that will lead to another clue. . .

Nice guess, mjp. It may be that, or -- just maybe -- a long lost story actually called "Woodbury nut" that appeared someplace besides STORY. Like in (as was said) the elusive WRITE magazine. Or somewhere else, in some mag we never heard of.
