I witnessed this brief conversation last Monday - when it was 80 degrees, sunny, and apparently the last day of summer. The scene was a traffic crossing on the North Side, near the lakefront. A couple had just stepped up on the sidewalk where I was unlocking my bike....

Blind Man : "Thank you so much."

Woman : "Are you sure you're OK from here ?"

Blind Man : "Aw, honey - I'm not scared, I'm just blind !"

I love moments like these. Where a city provides its own entertainment and inspiration. Hope you do too- just wanted to share.

Not something I witnessed (obviously) but a beautiful and unusual occurrence, no doubt.
Makes me proud.

"Life-or-death decisions depend on doctors thinking on their feet. Australian doctors, it appears, are also trained to think with their drink.

Doctors in a city 600 miles north of Brisbane have saved the life of an Italian tourist by administering rum, vodka and whisky for three days through a tube into his stomach.

The 24-year-old man from Milan, whose name has not been released, was brought to Mackay Base Hospital unconscious and in a serious condition after swallowing large quantities of ethylene glycol, a poisonous substance found in antifreeze.

The recommended treatment is purified pharmaceutical-grade alcohol, which acts as an antidote. But when hospital stores of alcohol ampoules ran out after 20 minutes and with off-licences - known as bottle shops - closed for the night, Todd Fraser, an intensive care specialist, had to be resourceful. The closest medical cupboard that he could think of was his own drinks cabinet at home.

Dr Fraser said: "He managed to go through three bottles of my finest before we ran out of that, but that got us through until the bottle shop opened.

"We were feeding him three standard drinks an hour for three days via a nasogastric tube. We were very worried he might not survive. He was extremely unwell. Ethylene glycol poisoning can cause renal failure."

The unconventional treatment proved effective. The man was discharged from hospital 20 days after being admitted and has since flown home to Italy."

Sorry 'bout the long post.

I work in a school for the blind and hear great one liners like the above everyday.
One day I changed a light above a guy doing woodwork. I said you'll need it when it gets dark.
He replied-bob it's dark all day down here.
yes its true I'm a moron

This morning I was about to run out the door to have breakfast in a cafe,
then I read number6horse "Beautiful exchange"
I turned around put the coffee on
got the bread ,jam and cheese,
picked up my purring cat, invited her for breakfast
just the 2 of us
played Martha Wainright
Who needs people all the time

I used to do volunteer work for the blind, reading them their mail, etc.. One day I arrived and was told there was a client waiting in one of the rooms. I walked in, turned on the light, and this guy quickly covered his eyes, screaming "Goddamnit - thats TOO BRIGHT" ! For a second I didn't know what to do. And he just sat there, trying to hold in his laughter. Yep - that was my "welcome" which I found out every volunteer received from this guy.

:)

Chicago is one of the friendliest big cities I've had the pleasure to visit. Maybe I was lucky all four times in as many decades.

No, I don't think you were merely "lucky" during your visits. Although we have as many problems as the average big American city, there remains a basic Midwestern friendliness and lack of pretension in the air. I likes it and I ain't movin' !

yes, chicago is the best! I visit chicago and detroit about the same number of times each year, being situated just about half way between the two (about 90 mins. to either) when I leave detroit I always get the feeling that I was lucky to escape with my life, when I leave chicago I feel like I am leaving an old freind and can't wait to visit again. even the drivers there have courtesy. ah, chicago, just a great, great place.....
