Bukowski at PBA Galleries July 14th

Hello all, I am the Senior Specialist at PBA Galleries and want to let you know about some upcoming Bukowski material in our auctions. Next week, on Thursday April 21st, we our having a sale of fine literature and other books which includes more that 40 lots by Charles Bukowski, many periodical appearances, chap books, a few of his primary works, some photographic works from the estate of photographer Michael Montfort, and several great letters from Bukowski to John William Corrington who provided the introduction for Bukowski's "It Catches My Heart In Its Hands." Thanks mjp. Opening bids on the letters and postcard are one-half of the low estimates, there are no further reserves on any of these items so we're hopeful that they will find their way into a new collection.

I am pleased to announce that on July 14, 2016 PBA Galleries will offer the Allen "Al" Berlinski collection of Charles Bukowski. A remarkable collection containing many early works, manuscript poems, correspondence, periodical appearances, broadsides, Black Sparrow Press editions (including many with original art work by Bukowski), works with contributions by Bukowski and more. The catalog will be available mid-June.

A new generation of Bukowski collectors is needed to buy something other than letters.

We are hard at work cataloging Al Berlinski's superb Bukowski collection. The catalog will be ready early next week. Books, broadsides, letters, original poems and short writings, it's all here. Auction July 14th.

It would be nice if all the pages of the poem and story manuscripts were uploaded, but I suppose something is better than nothing.

Anyway, if you're the curious type, you can start making your list as the lots are added. A lot of top shelf stuff there, to be sure. You have enough time before the auction to sell your car, and maybe your house. You know, just so you're prepared when the time comes.

Thanks for adding the link! Believe it or not I wasn't aware that you could find the upcoming lots before the catalog is complete. I spend my time on the back end of the website and rarely peruse from the user side. A caveat about this though, lot numbers will almost certainly change as we've not done the sort for the finished catalog yet and it is also possible that estimates and reserves may change as well. I'll be sure to post when it's all locked in place. Enjoy!

Actually our buyer's premium is competitive with or lower than most other specialty auction houses and you'll have to trust me that shipping is not a profit center for us. We bill at our cost plus a small handling fee for your total purchase (not per lot), really quite reasonable considering, in my opinion. If you need to know what shipping will cost prior to placing your bid, our shipping department is happy to help.

I get it, you work for them. But there's no justification for, or logical defense of, the "buyer's premium" (20% at PBA) that any auction house charges when they're already taking a cut from the seller (15% at PBA).

our buyer's premium is competitive with or lower than most other specialty auction houses...

Let's take a look at what that means for this particular auction.

Total bids: $157,185
PBA takes 15% (the cut they take from the seller) off the top of that total, which is $23,577.75
The "competitive" PBA buyer's "premium" of 20% is $31,437.00
PBA total take: $55,014.75

Using that total bid amount, let's compare the auction house take of 35% on the sale of any given item to, say, a real estate agent, who does roughly an equal amount of "work" and makes about 6% on a sale.

When a real estate agent sells a house for $157,185 they make $9,431.10 on the sale, which comes out of the seller's cut. They charge the home buyer no "premium."

Now, if PBA sold your $157,185 house using their standard auction fees, they'd take $23,577.75 from the seller's cut, and charge the buyer a "premium" price of $188,622 for the $157,185 house.

Is that justifiable? I don't know. Does the auction house provide a more valuable service than a real estate agent? Do they do more work to sell something?

PBA offers an audience, which is the same thing a good "specialty" (high-end) real estate agent offers. That's all they offer. If you think that audience justifies taking 35% of the sale of an item (more than most states will allow pawn shops to charge in interest), that's your prerogative.
