The kids are up to some wacky shit these days.

This is a CD/"vinyl" hybrid that plays in a CD player and on a turntable. If you look at the second picture you can see the grooves on the outer half of the disc, and the little plastic spindle turntable adapter...

The concept in itself is ridiculous enough, but it gets even crazier when you learn that the groove on each one of these was hand cut, one at a time, on a record mastering lathe. So someone had to manually cut the groove in 300 of these things. And there are more than 30 titles in the series, so someone has put in a lot of hours at the lathe.

It sounds (on a turntable) like an AM radio broadcast, but I don't imagine high fidelity was the point of doing it. I don't think there was any point in doing it other than someone saying, "I wonder what would happen if we stuck a CD on a cutting lathe?"

Which is more than enough reason to do it, really, so my hat is off to the creative lunatics who make these things.
