hello everyone (1 Viewer)

my name is Yannis, I'm living in Athens, Greece

I think I know Bukowski since I was 12 years old -by my stepmother when I found in her library "women"

I was introduced to his poetry by the father of a friend of mine 3 years later
-it was a collection of American underground poetry

I know there was a collection of Bukowski poems in Greek published in 1999, translated by Konstantinos Tsanakas, a very experienced translator.

susan (;) ), my french is dreadful. I can read it better than I can speak it.

I guessed right so !
you know in French the word 'cul' is prononced EXACTLY as the letter q

Where did you find Tony? In Snatch ? Good movie. Let's not forget Boris.

Welcome!

Boris the Blade? As in Boris the Bullet-Dodger? :D

@bospress.net : ha ! mia chara, esy ?

Bullet tooth Tony was played by a beloved English soccer star.

Soccer star is a bit of a stretch. He was a professional player. Infamous maybe, but not a star on the pitch.

Here he is famously tackling the very talented Paul Gascoigne.

Sorry Hank solo, here in the USA that makes him a star. It's not like he killed his ex wife.

I knew that was coming. Vinnie Jones played a great role in Snatch. When I go to England I expect it to be like in the movies.;)

Yannis ( gender not specified ) ...

you may know, Ger, i usually name people inside the forum by short-versions of their own chosen nick-names. (or sometimes make something up - hehe) while in personal contact, i usually call them by their 'real' name (but not always - hehe again).

xoxo!

I love it when you get all sensitive. I am sure you, like all Europeans I know, are very polite and nice to converse with. I was kidding you.;)

Now do you think this Yannis will write to us? Greeks are European too. :)

btw That Snatch trailer has the line Yannis mentioned, "You can call me Susan if you like". Great movie by Guy(Getting a divorce) Ritchie. More Europeans.

i ain't polite or sensitive at all, babe.

... and i even know a joke about American language:

Do you know the difference between British-English and American-English?

-

British-English goes 'S-P-O' (= Subject-Predicate-Object).

American-English goes 'S-F-P-F-O'
(= Subject-Fuckin-Predicate-Fuckin-Object).

haaa ha ha!
so much for my sensitivity.

Fuckin' LOL. Thank you I needed that.

and there's nothing wrong with being sensitive, even big tough German guys have feelings too.
I need a beer.

Yannis ( gender not specified )
ok.
a small lesson : in Greek EVERYTHING has a gender, even cities and countries
you can find the gender of a word by its final letters

eg words finishing by -is are usualy masculin, words finishing by -ia femminin and -io neutral

a very general rule of course with its exceptions and there are many other groups (I don't even know how many, is not as clear as in French) of words

so Yannis (pronnounced Yiannis or Iannis) is a boy, Yianna is a girl

ok.
a small lesson ...

Yannis!
thanks for the lesson!

being here a while, you'll find that a lot of our (esp. no-English-native) members do like to give information about their language. me too. i think this adds to the internationality (right word?) of our community.

"panta kala lian!"

so Yannis (pronnounced Yiannis or Iannis) is a boy, Yianna is a girl

And if I remember my Greek (I worked for Greeks for the better part of a decade, but do not speak Greek other than greetings or curses), Yannis is the English equivalent of John and Yianna is the English equivalent of Joan. I worked with a Yannis (we called him John). Not that everything has to be converted into English, but it makes it easier for those of us that were cursed by not being able to speak other languages....
