Well, Nick Cave (who?) has spoken. Say your goodbyes, the site will be shut down at 6 PM.

NC: If you took Bukowski the man away from his writing there's very little there but kind of self-referential...shit. But even though Berryman had a very colorful life, he was largely in our imaginations. When you think of Berryman you think of his poems and you think of his character Henry and all of that stuff. When you think of Bukowski you just think of Bukowski.

Bukowski's genius is not that you "just" think of Bukowski; more importantly, it's that you think of... well, yourself - who and what you are... He can take you inside, way beyond what he's writing about. How many writers can consistently do that with laughter and depth? [Deafening silence.]

When you think of Berryman, you think... well, of Berryman. He was "playful, witty, and morbid."... There's no shame in it, but Berryman committed suicide. He didn't make it to the finish line, and I find that important after wanting to throw in the towel myself in the dim past... I get more out of reading the finishers, because they maintain their connection with their inner light through sorrow, loss and disaster and find the strength, or grace, to live through it all.

Well I was all excited about finding a new home there until I saw this:

Now I don't feel welcome.

I agree with all their rules except this one: direct or indirect personal attacks are strictly not permitted .

I love Nick Cave, but sometimes he is just wrong. Plus, he can be a bit of a pompous ass at times.

I love him too and agree with All you said.

Plus:
I know of a certain author who can be "just wrong" with his judgings too, can be an ass too, violent and crude (ask G.Locklin) etc.
But I still admire, yet LOVE this author!

ps:
The last Nick Cave album I've bought was 'No more shall we part' and I like it but prefer his late 80s stuff by far ('Tender Pray' + 'Your funeral my trial').

Well spoken, Roni !
But don't tell me you've ignored the discs who have followed No more shall we part ! They're good !
That's Tender Prey and it's actually my favourite. ;)

Thank you very much for this article, Hoochmonkey9 ! I for the moment just read the part about Bukowski but I saw the rest is mostly dealing with his new novel. I heard about it maybe one year ago and didn't know it was already written ! That reminds me I still have to read the first one !

For those who haven't heard We call upon the author yet (at 3.38) :

Assuredly not my fav of the disc but the first time I heard the line, I was "rolling on laughing floor".

So much for free discussions. What's that forum about? The Nick Cave boyscout society?

then I guess ole Mr. Cave was spilling his real feelings when he sang "bukowski was a jerk," in his song.

Eh, whatever, I like Cave, love Buk, no problem if they wouldn't have gotten along.

I like a lot of what Cave has done over the years (not particularly the latest Grinderman stuff) but the SCUM manifesto? I tried reading that crap years ago, absolute drivel. When you separate Cave from his writing and music what have you got?

Another swinging dick that has to shave his mug and put his pants one leg at a time. Bukowski was not a God, neither is Cave.

I think Cave is quite a cool guy and all although you don't always have to agree with him, obviously. I don't really have a problem with what he says. How lame is the interviewer though?
Last year you recorded a song called "And We Call Upon the Author to Explain," where you praise John Berryman and sort of diss Charles Bukowski. I kind of think Bukowski sucks myself...
Non-commital yet sucking up to Cave (by agreeing) at the same time. I'd prefer it if he'd said 'I hate Bukowski myself'. At least then you'd know it was an actual opinion.

well Mr Cave lives in my home town so next time I see him I'll tell him about this discussion thr....ha ha...sorry I couldn't finish that.

He rents videos from my mates video shop though, so maybe I'll get him to sneak a copy of Barfly into the case for a documentary on 17th Century German architecture.

well i have to admit: there is a bit of truth there. buk the man is also part of the allure(a larger part, i think, than most fans would like to acknowledge) i'm a buk fan, but he wasn't a terribly good novelist. i'm sorry, he just wasn't. i just finished factotum and-i hate to say this-but i found it to be shockingly bad. it reads like a boring journal(first i did this, then this, then i went here, then there etc...) its basically the same chapter over and over. having said that, i loved p.office. ham on rye was pretty good. women had some good parts but was a little redundant. some of the poetry is enjoyable(not much of a poetry guy, so i can't really speak on that) but bottom line: if buk wasn't the crazy character he was, this web site does not exist.

I think of Buk as primarily a poet and a groundbreaking one. and I'm pretty sure Bukowski thought of himself as a poet first. the novels and short stories were important but secondary. so, I don't think your bottom line applies. there is an appeal to 'crazy characters,' but without the goods to back it up a website like this would fizzle out within a few months.

well i guess what i'm saying is: if buk had been more of a "regular guy" the site might not have had a chance to fizzle out-it prob wouldn't have existed at all. not because he's not a good poet, writer etc...but because he wouldn't have been as "known". i mean, how many famous poets are there? how many poets can the man on the street(or even writers or would be writers) name off the top of their head? I think the "dirty old man" persona kind of catapulted him to a certain level of fame, so i have to respectfully disagree there. to the larger point though, i don't really agree with this cave guy either. but theres def some truth there. but you're right: buk has the goods. no doubt.

one thing i forgot to add-and its a little off topic-is that "San Diego", translated, literally means "a whale's vagina". this just confirmed by ron burgendy. a new thread?

Since you're talking about this site, and I've been running it for more than a decade, I can tell you that you're wrong. Not just about the site, but about everything.

You're welcome. Run along.

"breaking news! this just in: hall monitor faggot ruins the fun because he can't take a little harmless criticism of his over-rated hero. and also because...wait...wait...its just coming in now...oh, he also has a shit sense of humor" nah. i wasnt going to, but i think ill hang around a while now. this boring site is starting to get fun

come on mjp! make your hero proud! where are you? if i dont hear from you soon i'll be forced to leave you here, humiliated. i gotta get over to my porn sites.

crickets eh? wow. you're soft. the brazen, fascist leader of the bukowski website, running away like "wild horses over the hills." bukowski wouldn't wipe his ass on your face. you're unworthy. over and out. for now...

Mr Lally,
I have been trying to contact him for years about publishing something of his. Please have your mate mention BoSP! I even had a contact, his publicist in London and sent him some stuff, but, of course, never heard a thing.....

Bill

Are you saying that all authors/poets/musicians/creative persons are solely remembered thx due to their crazy personalities?

Heavens to Betsy!
wow. you wrote 'heavens to betsy'...enough said there, i think

Are you high boy??
wish i was

the stone's head is filled with colourful plasticine.
how do you say, "the stone is the only sane person on this website" in German?

That guy has sunk like a stone.
oh please stop gerard! you're killing me with your cleverness! oh please have mercy!

Are you saying that all authors/poets/musicians/creative persons are solely remembered thx due to their crazy personalities?
i'm saying that average writers with average personalities don't have websites dedicated to them

No, don't stop him. He's probably someone we already know who has some issue with the camaraderie that exists in this forum. It may be his way of lashing out. Besides if he crosses too many lines or steps on too many toes someone will cut off his wings and toy with him as he crawls around.
Then again he'll become bored and go away. In the mean time our forum demographic needs at least a small percentage of asshats to qualify for federal funding for the arts.

lashing out? deep. thanks for the analysis dr phil. i'll go sit under a tree and contemplate that right after i write this. no, i'm all for comeraderie. like i said, i'm a buk fan, and actually, i think this site is pretty cool despite that smug cunt moderator and the rest of you sycophantic ass kissers(i have a little hope for you though b dante) i take issue w/the lack of objectivity. and how many lines do i have to cross before someone "cuts off my wings" gerald? i'm gonna keep crossing lines until someone earns my respect. like nervas said: SOMEBODY STOP ME BABY!

Can't help thinking this fairly represents what we are up against.

i'm a buk fan

Really? Why? Do you enjoy his novels?

he wasn't a terribly good novelist. i'm sorry, he just wasn't.

Not terribly good?

i just finished factotum and-i hate to say this-but i found it to be shockingly bad.

Oh, that bad? Okay. Okay, so you don't like him for his novels.

Maybe you like poetry?
some of the poetry is enjoyable(not much of a poetry guy, so i can't really speak on that)

You can't? I bet you could if you tried? No bon't try.

Here's the thing about the 'sycophantic ass kissers' here: We like Bukowski's novels. We like his poetry. We like his short stories, journals, letters and interviews. So we hang out here.

Your idea that Bukowski is some shocking wild man is I believe in incorrect assumption, based on a couple of video clips you've seen on youtube. The boring novels that you didn't like are about the regular guy that you don't see when you watch those clips.

Now, I can be objective too. Not all of Bukowski's writing is wonderful. Not all of his poems are genius. But so what? Where does it say that they are? Not on this site. But much of his writing is great. At least in my opinion. Guess that's more subjective though huh?

So the problem here is you don't really like Bukowski as much as many of us here.

That's not likely to change is it?

Take it easy.

has anyone on this site ever heared me calling for someone to be banned immediately?

no.
THIS is the first time.

Blah, blah...quack...blah blah blah.....and actually, i think this site is pretty cool despite that smug cunt moderator and the rest of you sycophantic ass kissers(i have a little hope for you though b dante) i...........

Your problem is obvious, but you sure are paying an awful lot of attention to a forum about a poet and writer you don't like. I have a feeling you will simple be put in a jar with no holes in the lid. No one likes a complainer but you already knew that, Oprah.
