outsider of the year (1 Viewer)

Digney in Burnaby

donkeys live a long time
Another thread has me pulling out a purple (settle down) scrapbook that has some c1978 photocopies of The Outsider. Copies were in the general stacks at UBC back then. I guess if I was a thief I'd have those copies as security was sporadic at the checkout at best. No beeping sensors, etc., just students opening up briefcases.

Apologies for the poor centering of these copies and the ensuing scribble to include cropped lines. All I can tell you is my handwriting has deteriorated over the years.

Enough. Here's a beginning salvo about "the outside of the year":

Thanks a lot, Digney! It's so great to finally get to see The Outsider!

Wow, very interesting. I never knew they invited all these editors of B. to share their opinions on the "outsider of the year" award. Great.

thanks digney i've always wanted to see that. 'utterly raw and genuinely poetic' is a great description of his work.
i thought he misread stefanile's comments at the end - they seemed positive to me and more about him being 'outside' and totally honest in his writing.

The next part of The Outsider is the R.R. Cuscaden essay "Poet in a Ruined Landscaped". Has that been collected anywhere yet (he asked, not looking first)?

I see a link to the essay but you need to pay money to read it.

So if it hasn't been collected I'll put it up here in the next few days.

poet in a ruined landscape

While the scanner is warmed up here's the R.R. Cuscaden essay on Bukowski's poetry from that same issue. And a scan of the cover of one of Cuscaden's books.

Felix Stefanile was (is?) a tight, stiff, self-righteous ass-hole. I've seen his correspondence to other editors (JB May, for instance), and he's always putting B. down in a very snobbish tone (hmm, that reminds me of someone from Wheeler, TX). I always wondered why he published B. in The Sparrow...

interesting - i guess i misread it then.

thanks again digney - that eviction notice is a riot! excessive drinking, fighting and foul language??? shocking!

More from the Outsider issue. William Corrington on three poems. Nice artwork by Bukowski as well.

Again, apologies for the late 1970s photocopying machine and my inability to keep things in frame. The scribbling is me recapturing the cropped lines.

Okay I ain't smart enough to get the sixth attachment in there with the tools provided. I'm sure it can be done and no doubt will be done by a smart moderator (shaking their heads at the poor sonuvabitch from Kanaduh).

I believe Bukfan first pointed out this link to some Corrington-Bukowski correspondence.

That's right.

Back from die. Helluva place.

Three poems in this outsider of the year issue. Two definitely have been collected ("the house" is in the words section of this site). The third, not sure.

Some really cool letters from Bukowski finished off the Outsider of the Year issue. Not sure how many have been collected. A look at 1962, the year Jane died and Buk's reaction to that and many other things happening. Sounds like September 1962 was a tough month for Bukowski, the outsider award perked him up, like the Mexican girl in the charity ward did years earlier (mentioned in one of these letters).

Thanks again and again and again and again ... ;)

Thanks a lot, Digney! Interesting letters, and it was great to finally get to see some of the stuff from The Outsider.
