What kind of bastard? (1 Viewer)

In the poem "the twins," Bukowski says:
he hinted at times that I was a bastard and I told him to listen

Now, is he saying that his father hinted that he [Bukowski] was born out of wedlock or is it just good old name-calling?

On first read I thought name-calling, but use of the word hinted really strongly suggests that Buk means his Father dropped the occasional line or two to suggest that Buk was born out of wedlock. I'm not sure that Buk would have cared much one way or the other.
