"And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine"... (1 Viewer)

interesting tidbit about O'Day...she had no uvula. it was accidentally cut off during a toncillectomy. therefore she couldn't hold notes and had no vibrato. thus her singing style.
christ, I'm even boring myself.
can't be too sad for o'day, though. she rode life like a bullrider and made it to 87. she didn't waste anything. we should all be so lucky.

Sorry the link is no longer active...but it was Anita O'Day
whom Bukowski was playing on the jukebox in his famous
story about that rowdy gang in Philidelphia, where if he'd
joined them his story in "Story Magazine" might have been
his swan song. (And I would have had no other option
other than to join the robertcreely.net forum and probably
commit suicide shortly thereafter.) Thank God he didn't
join that gang! ;) "”Popcock.

Hoochmonkey,

Not boring! I had no idea. And yeah... a bit of a miracle... her longevity. Glad to know of her unusual condition, because I've wondered where her original style came from... and what I learned is why I enjoy this forum.

other than to join the robertcreely.net forum and probably
commit suicide shortly thereafter.)

Sorry, but that should have been robertcreeley.net with
an "e" that I would have ended it all to. Some people are
just genetic Bukowski fans, Robert.

For those who haven't heard the Anita O'Day song Bukowski
played over and over again in that Philadelphia bar 60 years
ago"”before and after he got blackjacked by one of the bar
owner's gang members"”here's a 1 minute sample:

The entire song can also be downloaded at iTunes from the
"Masterpieces: Stan Kenton" album.

Not a bad song for the era.

Buk recounts the story in Barbet Schroeder's The Bukowski Tapes.

HC,

Sorry about your problems with the link...not sure why.
You've probably already tried bypassing the link and
going to CDdirect through Google? You can also get a
30" sample at iTunes if you're running that. Or check
with any on-line music retailer on your service
provider that offers sound samples of vintage recordings.

(I've beeen playing the tune all day, but strangely I've noticed
that I have to keep feeding my computer quarters and I
just got clubbed over the head with a blackjack. Will return to
the forum after recovering from this unexpected side-effect.)
Luck.

PT.

Just came across this song again while watching "The Big Sleep" (1946) with Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall. It features in a rowdy night club scene there. Some pretty rough lyrics in the song which includes gambling, drinking, violence and death. Opening lines:
he would spend it on the ponies, he would spend on the girls, buy his mother gin and roses, for her (bald headed curl?)

Bob Dylan also played it in episode 39 of his Theme Time Radio Hour (http://patrickcrosley.com/?q=node/90).

By the way... the original song was a hit in 1944 so it could be used as a date-reference for his "on the bum" years & the timeline ...

Reviving an old thread:

Song, And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine mentioned in of the Bukowski Tapes.

by Anita O'Day with the Stan Kenton Orchestra.

Lauren Bacall doing a version in .

Lyrics:

And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine
(Stan Kenton, Charles Lawrence, Joe Greene)

He would spend it on the ponies
He would spend it on the girls
Buy his mother gin and roses
For her poor old henna'd curls

And when his wife said "Hey now!
What did you get for me?"
He socked her in the choppers
Such a sweet, sweet guy was he!

And her tears flowed like wine
Yes, her tears flowed like wine
She's a real sad tomato
She's a busted Valentine
Knows her mama done told her
That her man is darned unkind

How he loved the old race horses
He would bet them every day
One day he caught a winner
And the cabbage wasn't hay!

He indulged in fancy spending
Ordered rings, cars and furs
But alas, alack
Like a stab in the back
She found out they were not hers!

And her tears flowed like wine
Yes, her tears flowed like wine
She's a real sad tomato
She's a busted Valentine
Knows her mama done told her
That her man is darned unkind

He got mixed up with a Maisie
He got mixed up with a Flo
So Flo shoved him in the river
He'll not get mixed up no more!

His wife then draped herself in black
That showed her figure fine
Then she cussed him out
The two-faced guy
No insurance could she find!

And her tears flowed like wine
Yes, her tears flowed like wine
She's a real sad tomato
She's a busted Valentine
Knows her mama done told her
That her man is darned unkind!

My Grandmother.

God Bless Her Soul. She always said, "where there is booze there can be no happiness."

My grandpap was really a true Son-Of-A-Bitch. And she was the most wonderful woman I have ever known. I never listened to her enough, but I still hear her every day.

Thanks Man, Great post. CRB:)
