So, what other poets get you like Bukowski does? (2 Viewers)

It may be mine, then. Still, I stand by my last comment that I am not so good at the whole barcode/isbn thing. In fact, when my current isbns run out I will not renew them. $250 for 10 of them and I have never found any benefit in using them.

In defense of Dogdice I would say that even though I love some poetry dearly, the vast majority of it I could care less for.

It's like with music lovers, like myself, I really believe that the vast majority of it I could live without.

Remember, Bukowski hated most poetry, too.

I know this will mean very little to anyone here, but one of my favourite poets, possibly even more than Buk, was a Portuguese born poet called Sebastião Alba.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastião_Alba

He was an extremely marginal poet who lived many years in Mozambique, and who ended up living in the streets when he returned to Portugal, by his own choice; walking the country on foot or hitchhiking, writing his papers in napkins and small notebooks which he then offered to his friends and relatives. He claimed he had to unlearned everything he had been taught, and that society was a fixed game - when it gave you something, there was something else stolen from you.

So in 2000, after offering so much poetry and art to the world, his life was finally stolen by some anonymous coward, in a hit and run accident. A few days before, he had written a paper to his daughters, where he said: (and I'm paraphrasing)

"When they find me some day, the spoils will be easy to check: 2 shoes, my clothes and a few papers which the police will not understand."

He slept in church doors, shopping malls and barns. Occasionally he'd be picked up by the police and they'd beat him up. He drank a lot, had serious health problems by the time he finally died. But his mind stayed sharp as a knife; his wit was flawless, his art and his latter days sarcasm about Literature and the estabilished 'writers' was impeccably accurate and merciless.

Living in the streets, he had his name in the encyclopedias. I knew about him only after his death, in 2000. for over a year I searched his rare books and gathered a huge quantity of material on him. I even met his family, at one point had the passion to write a biography which I started and sketched.

But it would never be enough to sketch this man, who was so complex that no book especially by an amateur could ever do him justice. I limited myself to treasuring his Art.

I'm sorry for not posting any poetry, but he wrote in Portuguese, and there is very little if any translations of the poems in english, and his craft did not benefit from translation I'm afraid. His wordplay and poem construction was complex and unique. Maybe some spanish members can try to look up some of his Portuguese poems though if they can understand it enough.

Heh here I am ranting again...

Here's a quick translation I did of a few short prose texts, most of them written on the street, for the benefit of anyone looking to know more. He always carried a small pocket radio tuned to a 24 hour classical music station (he had trouble getting batteries sometimes), and occasionally a canary (or a nightingale, which he quickly offered to some close friend) or a dog.

"Só anjos (estou a pensar em Mozart) suportam a mediocridade sem se matarem. Eu sou uma forma híbrida; tenho um pacto com a terra e já não posso mais.
Aquela flauta no "Requiem" de Mozart não nos dá uma ideia de deus, mas da nossa escalada (infinita) para, enfim, deparar com a sua ausência."
Albas, pag.159

Only angels (I'm thinking of Mozart) can stand mediocrity without killing themselves. I am a hybrid form; I have a pact with the earth, and I can't stand any more.
That flute in the Rquiem of Mozart does not give us an idea of God, mas of our (infinite) climb, to finally discover His absence.

Albas, pag.94

I remain on the other side of the door, while others go in, passing me by, watching me there.
They smile; you take them in, the door closes, but I can read ever since I was 19. I know what they are worth, I just have to pass my eyes over the poems they wrote, in their prime, in their 20s and 30s. They can't move beyond that, despite the school of self-praise, of mutual praise, and the publishing, they manage, I don't know how.

Outside the door is where I feel good.

Apart from his beautifull songs, I think Leonard Cohen's poetry is hovering around the skies, once in a while touching someone's heart. 30 years ago I was allowed to sit on my brother's bed while he studied his books. He had a record player and 2 records. Pink Floyd's Dark side of the moon and Leonard Cohen's Songs of Love and Hate, which struck me. I kept switching and switching them. Ever since then I cannot enough of Cohen. A wizzard in poetry I think. Love his books too. Hate to discuss it really, like you cannot discuss wine not excitement. You can only drink the words and feel utter satisfaction.

Kind regards,
Marjan v.d. Meulen (Holland)

If you like Bukowski ..

you'll LOVE My Husband....His poetry speaks with power and intelligence. I am a huge fan of Bukowski and Fante and My Husband's writing is eloquently amongst the realms of such great writers ...his words ebb and flow thick and sweet as syrup. I have read both My Husband's books . . .

How much are you offering to pay me if I don't? Because I don't.

The bits you can read on line are very pedestrian and dull. Though I will admit it is quite feat to write a dull poem about being in prison. Maybe that's the point. He's pomo and way over my head.

But people have a penchant for authors who have done hard time, so for some reason a lot of them are published when their notebooks should have been chucked into the prison dumpster on their release.

And these forums are not a place for pseudo press-releases by one-time slash and burn posters. Take that shit elsewhere. Hang around for a while, contribute, and your recommendations will be taken very seriously. But what you posted is just spam, and I removed most of it.

well, you're determined. I guess that counts for something.
what, I don't know.
I can barely get my wife to read my stuff, let alone go to websites to shill for me.
but maybe I'm doing something wrong.

So is that why you are here, to shill for your husband? I don't know his work and cannot comment on it. It could be good or not so good, I have no idea. I just don't know, but it is dishonest to show up on a forum like this and pretend that you are trying to make a point that has some valid reason, when the only point is to get more google hits for your husband (or sell more books). You posted that you read both of RB's books and loved them, without mentioning that he was your husband. Are you related to the Smoky Voiced Kirsten Abjornsen? I hear that she is amazing, but have no connection to her or to her label.... Maybe if you had just come out and said that your husband writes and that you think that he is very good it would have been different. We probably would not have felt like we were being toyed with and sold....

This would explain the 5,200 google hits. I guess that going on forums and dropping a name will get you hits and wll allow you to write a Wikipedia page and not have wikipedia remove it under their "rules"...

Sorry if I seem like an ass. I do my share of shilling product (although I am always upfront about what I am selling and have still given away more than I have sold), so maybe I don't have any standing to say anything, but your three posts all revolve around secretly trying to promote your husband's work.

Of course, I am not a moderator or owner of this site, but I vote for removing all references to his name from these posts as they will just help add more google hits for his name.

Bill

p.s. I am only assuming that you are his wife. I do know that your profile links you to his "production" company, so if you are not related, you are certainly ascting as his "agent" in some way. Apologies if I mis-represented anything.

just to clarify....
I don't know if that's her husband or not, but she's shilling on his myspace page like a crazed zealot.
the husband part may or may not be true.
but I stand by my sentiment.

Wasn't this post supposed to be about whom else do you liked beside Bukowski?
Hmmm, gee I guess somewhere it all got lost in the translation and everyone JUMPED on the shit bandwagon... I merely stated whom else I liked... and that got turned into a shit storm...

Who cares if I am the wife, neighbor, dog sitter, or hair stylist of said poet or not? I THINK his stuff is like that of Bukowski, Fante and the likes... and maybe other people would like it as well or maybe that won't... If you don't like what he writes, cool don't read it! But, don't shove your negative remarks down my throat for who I like!!-. There is NOTHING wrong with trying to turn people on to NEW things... new writers... what have you...

For the most part ALL of you have certainly taken this in the WRONG avenue... SO I think My Husband's writings are Great, perhaps I'm bias... I'm Not force feeding anyone to read his stuff , I'm merely giving My opinion of who else I like.. I like Leonard Cohen as well... I now wonder what kind shit storm that will commence HA-.... Can we all MOVE on now...

With all respect, the point is that many of us are convinced that you could care less about this forum or Bukwoski and are only using it to promote the work of your husband the same way others have some on here to try to sell Vioxx, Viagra or Rolexes. Had you said in the beginning that your husband writes and that his name is XXXX, XXX then it would not seem like you were trying to just turn us on to an author that you dig, instead of actually just trying to promote his work. It felt like a con, really.

We had another person that posted to let us know that they just heard a GREAT CD by a Swedish lady who was singing over Buk's words. It turned out that he was the promoter for this singer (which was hidden by his postings). He talked about how he just bought the CD (that was a lie, as he was the promoter for the label) and was blown away by it (That could have been a lie. Who knows, he was being PAID to promote it). Again, if he had come at us without playing us for fools it would have been different.

I have nothing against you or your husband. I just know how this will end. Once you realize that the Bukowski.net forum will not get your husband's work out there, you'll be gone and we'll look back to see that you never once posted anything that was not solely to promore his work.

Best wishes (and I do mean that),
Bill

Well, hey there, Tiff. Let me introduce myself.

I'm Father Luke. I'm one of the moderators at Bukowski dot net slash Forum.

There's lots, and lots to see and do here.

Heck, you could almost call this a regular Bukowski Web Site!

Currently we are in what is called the Forum.

Forums are structured by what we call threads. You've written an opinion, or a poast (post for the purists among us) in a thread calling for opinions about other authors we like as much as Bukowski.

When you first came here you poasted the same opinion over and over and over and over and over and over and. . .

. . . and what you didn't realize is that first poasts are moderated. So, The poast was allowed.

Seems as if you have taken rather badly to othersopinions of what you enjoy.

Tiff? Too bad! Really, we are all adults here, with the possible exception to me, i'm a thirteen year old computer genius (not really . i'm more like this many fingers, but you know what I mean) and as adults everyone is entitled to their opinion.

See how that works?

Some people disagree that your husband's stuff is among the greats. Well. . . okay. Chin up. You have your opinion, they have theirs.

See how that works?

And, frankly? Who would want anyone to fawn over someone with out being able to judge them for themselves.

So. Is your huband near a computer? Maybe he can come join the fun also. Because in addition to the thread about your husband here, there are threads about Bukowski, and Fante, and all the other guys who are doing battle to grab your husband's interest. I hope some of the other threads grab your interest, too, Tiff. Then you can enjoy what there is to enjoy here. And I think that there really is a lot here to enjoy.

All the best. Really, and truly.

Okay,

You know, it's funny you mention "Dog Sitter", now I know why your having such a hard time here. We had a "Dog Sitter Cam". Nothing more needs to be said.
Except, unless that guy that rocks was or is in jail for being a political prisoner, he is a criminal. Oh maybe he was just cooking speed or broke into a house and took some poetry books.
Seriously, the title of this thread should be: So, what other famous poetsget you like Bukowski does?
Hey welcome to the forum and have a nice day.:):D:o

I started with Zen master Ikkyu, I'm a bit cautious to use that word here though but in the end it doesn't really mean anything "zen". I found that ikkyu's poetry has helped to me to find charles' poetry and I think I'll stay with that

You know my sister had been bugging me to read some Alica Walker poetry for ages, and then I found a copy of her first book of poems in a charity shop for a few pennies. I was surprised, in a good way (not like walking in on your gran tucking her breasts into her stockings). Her poetry is simple but powerful.

I may even read 'The Colour Purple' now.

RB is the husband of Tiff, who was outed a while back for posting press releases for her husband.

I suspect that Dr Diesel is someone else related to RB and someone else who thinks that we are stupid enough to buy the line of crap being fed to us.

Maybe you should block all IPs that are coming from his part of Washington, or we may start getting posts from gramma telling us about a great poet that writes just like Bukowski...

It is interesting, that they all think that they are smarter then everyone else.

yawn.

Bill

p.s. I'd change his name to RB on this forum to not let him get the coveted Google hits that he desires...

I guess that they do think that we are stupid.

Maybe they should move on and try another forum. Maybe Stephen King or Sidney Sheldon have forums where the RB folks can shill their wares...

Bill

I usually don't get involved in such trivial pissing matches,.but it's a slow Friday and my house boy Hop Sing burnt my toast intolerably to my liking .. Hop Sing's days are numbered!!! Obviously you all have me confused with someone else! .. Although I really don't see how you could...

I am the best selling author of Weasels with the Measles and Chinese Cheeseburger.
I am a Writer and Illustrator, Paranormal Investigator, Underwater Ballroom Dance Instructor. I have a Doctorate in Philosophy and Animal Husbandry from Cambridge, my favorite past times are as follows.. Shotgun Golf, Masturbation & Dancing with the Stars... that Chuck Liddell can really cut a rug.

I do not know nor have I have ever had the pleasure of meeting Mr. [Tiff's husband] (he is rather a handsome fellow and I am in need of a new house boy as Hop Sing is becoming rather insolent)..... But neither here nor there, I can say I have no plans in the near future of meeting him... I stumbled across his book while in one of my favorite whack shops. One needs marital aids now and again... I got a case of the trots and had to sit out my pursuing until it was safe for all involved. Stone Hotel was on the back of the toilet... I had time to kill so I read through it and it didn't make me vomit so I stole it... I figured hey... let the next guy bring his own reading material...

So there you have it...

SO I STAY NEAR THE DOOR
An Apologia for my Life
By Samuel Shoemaker

I stay near the door.I neither go too far in, nor stay too far out,

Ed: Snip, snipperty, snip-snip. No poems thanks.

The thread title did not specify this,
and there were quite some posts of full poems.
I apologize for breaking another one of this forum's many rules,
and I would like to thank you for my welcoming stay here.
With all due respect to Bukowski,
I think this site belongs to assholes.

Oh, this is a poem that means much to me.
I'm glad I can share it;

Vladimir Mayakovsky does it for me,
My girl snapped a copy of his "Bed Bug and other poems" off of ebay 5 years or so ago for next to nothing.
I picked it up for a "Toilet read" a few months back and now wonder what i was snoozing on.

Nice forum, sorry to post in an old thread. I just stumbled across you from Google while at work.
