Yes, maybe we should have a thread for the gangster/crime movies - and one for Best Westerns!;)

I forgot The French Connection 1 & 2. Great movies!
M? - The old German one with Peter Lorre? I've seen it many years ago. It's quite famous.

Gerard: Yes, Casino is also a great gangster movie! I even went out and bought the book!

10 Best Comedies of all time?:

10. Napoleon Dynamite
9. Fletch
8. Planes, Trains & Automobiles
7. Young Frankenstein
6. Monty Python Search for the Holy Grail
5. Blazing Saddles
4. Sleeper
3. Blues Brothers
2. Dr. Strangelove
1. The Big Lebowski

Forgot a lot of movies...but I have to use my 30 minutes editing time to put Spinal Tap in there somewhere near the top.

Duel, early one by Steven Spielberg. Dennis Weaver vs. an anonymous truck driver.
Taxi Driver.
Cool Hand Luke.
The Haunting, the original with Claire Bloom, from the novel by Shirley Jackson.
Blade Runner.
The Rowdyman, early Gordon Pinsent who got nominated for an Oscar last year, a 50 year in the making overnight success.
Gulliver's Travels, animated by the Fleischer Bros.
The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane, when I fell in love with Jody Foster.

Most of these seen on t.v. Last time I went to a theatre was close to 15 years ago.

Thanks chronic, I haven't checked angryalien for ages. They've added a few since my last visit. Some of those are better than the originals.

lol
I was just reading the Was Bukowski somewhat bisexual thread and then to see this. It's too bad when you have a crush on someone who has made another choice. Then if what has been rumored about her is bullshit then, nevermind. I think Jodie Foster is a great actress and is quite attractive.

I hate to break it to you Gerard, but you were probably never in the running either way. On the bright side, since we're talking sexual fantasies here, now you can have Jodie Foster and Rosie O'Donnell... umm, wait a minute, let's make that someone other than Rosie. Bea Arthur maybe?

Hmmm, I guess I'll have to get back to you on that. This will require some deep thinking.

Yo chronic I am not the one who said he was in love with Jodie Foster. She has played some great roles, however. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Rosie is another story.

Vancouver international film festival is running now and I am thinking about movies and I am making this an excuse to reply to this old thread with my favorite list. the order is arbitrary.

1. Nostalgia (Andre Tarkovsky, 1983)
2. Umberto D (Vittorio De Sica, 1952)
3. Time of the gypsies (Emir Kusturica, 1988)
4. La Strada (Fredrico Fellini, 1954)
5. The seven samurai (Akira Kurusawa, 1954)
6. Life, and nothing more (Abbas Kiarostami, 1991)
7. Pulp fiction (Quentin Tarantino, 1994)
8. The elephant man (David Lynch, 1980)
9. Children of Heaven (Majid Majidi, 1997)
10. Ballad of Narayama (Shohei Imamura, 1983)

It changes almost every year but right now my all time Top 10 would be

1. Taxi Driver
2. The Dreamlife of Angels (La Vie rêvée des anges)
3. Cool Hand Luke
4. Barton Fink
5. Masculin, féminin
6. A Bridge Too Far
7. The Royal Tenenbaums
8. Dead Man's Shoes
9. Oldboy
10. Alfie (The Caine Version, not the horrid Jude Law remake)

This is quite a list. You have very diversified taste. Terms of Endearment and Superbad on the same list it must mean you have a very broad mind- I mean that in a good way.

Is that ten in French?

:)
No. That's ten in urdu.
I was not the first one to go beyond the required number. And I've got a bunch of new titles which have come in my mind after reading the others' lists. Can I add them ? Can I ? :p
I see you quoted a film from Mario Bava. Being fond of giallos but having mainly seen Dario Argento's ones, I one day tried Mario Bava. It was Hatchet for the honeymoon and I would easily put it in my top 10 worst movies. :D

I didn't see Denys Arcand mentioned in other lists. He's Canadian and in my opinion one of the finest directors out there.
I saw Jésus de Montréal last week and it made me feel like viewing your top 3.

I didn't see "Jésus de Montréal" yet, but I'm downloading it now. The three movies listed were the only ones I saw by Denys Arcand and I liked all of them a lot.

Before Night Falls - Julian Schnabel
The Dancer Upstairs - John Malkovic
Naked - Mike Leigh
Talk to Her - Pedro Almadovar
Black Cat, White Cat - Emir Kusturica
The Big Lebowski - Coen Bros.
The Lives of Others - Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Wes Anderson
Land and Freedom - Ken Loach

and of course...

Flesh Eating Mothers - James Aviles Martin
(it was a close call between that and Rabid Grannies, or even, Zachariah-the first hippy western!)

This is really more a list of films I love than a definative 'my top 10'. My memory has more holes than the Swiss army and its cheese.

crap, I forgot El Topo!

Well, these would be a good start;
Run Lola Run
Apocalypse Now
Chinatown
Godfather I
City of God
The Good,The Bad,And the Ugly
Breathless
The Emerald Forest
Catch 22
The Big Blue

Land and Freedom - Ken Loach

That's a great film! It gives a realistic view of the life of the militia's at the front during the Spanish Civil War. It reminded me a lot of Orwell's book, "Homage To Catalonia". It describes the life at the front in much the same way as the film.

This is true. Though I must admit it becomes quite taxing when you try and read through the complexities of the Spanish Civil War. Why couldn't the lefties just get along ;) I still find it amazing that people like Orwell left their homeland off their own back to face fascism head on. I couldn't imagine people doing that nowadays.

I watched Che Part 1 the other week and I thought that was another example of how to make a film about guerilla warfare realistic.
