- how much is 2 euro-cent in dollars right now? 200?
I think it's $350 and a barrel of oil.

I had some good teachers too, but we didn't have cell phones and computers and wide screen TV with 300 channels.

We had kerosene lamps and a soup bone, and we were damn glad to have those!

But really, the number of distractions in the world has increased to the point that I don't know how a 15 year old finds any time to think about anything.

Some advice to all the ladies out there

8. Jarvis Cocker:
Quirky little video - & song.

Tip: As the playlists get shorter, just play each tune twice ;)

At about 3:59 Kenny Jones does variations on thumpa-thumpa to reasonably good effect. Rod's pallor needed that facial hair. Ronnie Lane doesn't look like himself but there ya go. It's only a 70s band.

this song never fails to get my blood flowing, no matter how many times I've heard it.
I always hit repeat.

I think Alex Turner is one of the best young lyricists in rock today. for whatever that's worth. heh.

[*]The Smiths - Asleep (roni)

first of all:
i demand this song to be at the END of the list (as stated then), because it IS an ending!!!

Lets try to get up to 18 again folks...
okay, here's my contribution for this week:
SERGE GAINSBOURG --- MANON

for the very little few of us who don't speak french: it's about a cruel, unfaithful, betraying woman - but still he loves her.

(i think it could be a reference to the novel 'Manon Lescaut' by Prevost.)

Sorry roni, my bad. I didn't read your post properly when I compiled/summarised the week 1 list. Fixed it now. What do you think of the theory that Morrissey is referring to suicide in the lyrics to Asleep? Oh let's not go there. Happy happy happy thoughts.

If it's okay, Serge will be track 11 on the current list.

Week #whatever.

1) Lyle Lovett -
A great lyric from a guy who writes lots of great lyrics.

Another song, this one by Fred Eaglesmith. Canadian, no doubt making loads of money because of Canadian content rules (something by him played once every six months on CBC).

Double header / The blessings of the internet:

OK, so I've had this song lodged in my brain for years. (No it's not Combine Harvester) Not actually the whole song that is, but a bit of the refrain that goes like this: "Without love, we are like ships in the night...".
I remembered really liking the song, but I just couldn't recall its title nor the band nor anything else about it. I only remembered hearing it on good old Radio Luxembourg's top twenty program (or was it top thirty?).

I guess we all have songs like that lodged deep into our cortex.

Anyway, in time the internet appeared on the earth, with all it's multitudes of satellite connected search engines, and low and behold! The spirit of the net descended upon me and allowed me to rediscover this song:
3. Ships in the Night.

Yeah, a nice summery kind of 70's pseudo-reggae with a brilliant guitar solo to boot.

But the blessing is not only rediscovering this little gem but discovering a completley unknown (for me) but amazing band from the 70s: Be Bop Deluxe. With Bill Nelson at the guitar-helm and songs like this to listen to with virgin-like wonder:

So, I guess the internet's not all bad...

Bill Nelson is a really talented guitarist. It's almost a shame that he drifted off into electronica never-never-land. I saw Be Bop Deluxe at the Santa Monica Civic on their tour supporting Sunburst Finish, and later Bill Nelson with just a guitar and reel-to-reel (and w/Phranc, the Jewish-American Lesbian Folksinger, as the opening act) at the Whisky A Go Go. I still pull out Sunburst Finish from time to time. It really was a great album.

Not sure what it takes to get a song on the list (maybe just suggest it?)...but is anyone familiar with the tune:

Bring Me My Shotgun by Lightning Hopkins? If not, give it a listen...

Anarchy? No! Numbers people numbers!!
