How much of a misanthrope are you? (1 Viewer)

Hey, I already answered that question in the 'How much of a cynic are you?' thread!

I don't drink, but I'm not a big socializer in general. I don't see a lot of people outside of my retail job. I'm content to spend the day home with my wife and son, or (if they're away) reading, watching movies, playing video games (while I can afford them), etc. I prefer the company of myself to others.

I dunno if I'd qualify as a misanthrope, but I'd sure like to. I usually only describe myself with one or two syllable words.

I'd love to consider myself one and to a degree it's true but I don't think that anyone who utilizes public forums like this one can really call themselves misanthropic...and don't even mention Facebook or MySpace members who call themselves misanthropes. A true misanthrope doesn't give a shit what people think or whether or not they KNOW that he/she doesn't give a shit what they think. How seriously can you take yourself as antisocial when you sign up to a web forum like this? Or a blog site?

As for wanting people wiped off the Earth...I don't enjoy company, but I'd draw the line at genocide; even hypothetical or figurative genocide. We know ourselves by who we are not. If everyone else dies who would be left to see us ignore them? Who would be left for us to look at and say, "well, at least I'm not YOU"...

We need the masses, we need the crowds.

Wanda: I can't stand people. I hate them.
Henry: Yeah.
Wanda: You hate them?
Henry: No, but I seem to feel better when they're not around.

Ha, yeah I was remembering that scene too. That dialog is my cell phone greeting.

Well online interactivity is a different kind of society. Social in a way, but a lot less personal.

Also, I'm unsure of what hypothetical or figurative genocide is. But I don't support genocide. Because every sperm is sacred.

I just meant hypothetical or figurative genocide as in thinking about it, debating it, postulating it as a wish or a plan, even non-seriously...

As opposed to literal genocide, which would actually be engineering it or carrying it out.

And I meant, I'm antisocial but not to the point of genocide, in reference to the other poster's comment about wishing the populace could be wiped away.

It is different, yes, but it's still a cowardly formy of misanthropy. If you need people, if you need interaction -which is fine- then have a Facebook, have a MySpace, post blogs, Tweet, join a public forum...just don't pretend you are misanthropic, because claiming to be antisocial yet indulging in online interaction is like a priest jerking off to kiddie porn yet never actually molesting any altar boys.

As in being safely and secretly contradictory to the nature you have, or profess to have. Very hypocritical.

Many in modern society, though, would consider socialization or interaction online to be incredibly anti-social. And I wouldn't completely disagree. I don't think one really needs to be completely anti-social to be misanthropic either (nor do I think its something to be either proud of ashamed of).

To say that someone with a social networking account isn't misanthropic is a bit odd to me and I would disagree. Maybe not a hardline misanthrope, certainly, but it doesn't mean one still doesn't detest regular, normal human interaction.

And I would let priests jerk off to whatever they want, as long as they don't touch my son.

Misanthropes need social interaction in order to think that everybody sucks.
What would Squidward Quentin Tentacles be without Spongebob Squarepants and Patrick Star? Feed your hate- meet your friends.

Instead of asking " How much of a misanthrope are you?", it would be more interesting to ask " How much of a misanthrope was Bukowski?"

Well for one, he may have had the guts to come out of the closet.

Er, I mean... I have no idea of what you speak...

to me 99.9% of all people in my country are boring, narrow-minded, egocentric assholes. watching them for one second on the street is enough to know how they live, think and feel. the remaining 0.1% are staying at home, feeling disgusted by the 99,9%. shit, i will never meet them.

You're a true misanthrope! Congrats, you've won a teddy bear...:D

Y'all strive to be Hyde Park, don't you know. And the good wife and I have migrated a few miles north into our very own domicile.

And yes, I'm a misanthrope. For what that's worth.

Misanthropy was a unique position in the world Buk came out of. It's passe now...almost a fashion statement. "Fuck the World" tatooed on a yuppie's bicep. "Girls who cut themselves" on the Maury Povich Show. Kurt Cobain. The Sex Pistols. The list goes on and on.

I think it takes more guts to NOT hate humanity. I'm not saying I've got that sort of fortitude in me..but it would be refreshing to come across a writer who does.

I don't feel like Buk actually hated people, anyway...he was just tired of it all, Tired of THEM. He embraced being an outsider, but wasn't happy about it. No fair.

do you try to avoid people? like staying home and getting drunk? ever feel like most of humanity should be wiped off by a plague? :)
I like zombies - you get bit, you become a zombie and start eating other people who in turn become zombies and start eating others. Eventually all mankind becomes zombies and eventually rot to nothing. Does this make me a misanthrope?
